Getriebe: Transmission again, question to Erich

Hello Erich,
since you are in Japan and cars there drive on the left (right way) side, just like in the UK, I have a transmission question, please.

In a previous post I mentioned that my transmission gave up going in reverse. And that I was going to buy a second hand one from a dealer or ebay here in Germany. But you gave me some excellent contacts to telephone as well.

Now I get different suggestions: One BMW garage man says that you cannot fit a German transmission in a UK right hand drive, another garage man says it makes no difference.

I will call Andre Hötzel to get my transmission fixed, replaced, whatever. in the meantime please tell me who's right. Meant to say it's an automatic as well (forgot to mention)

it is correct that the right hand drive models (UK and Japan) have a different gearbox when it comes to partnumbers. no idea what the exact difference is. could be some minor electrical/valve difference, but could also be a mechanical difference aswell. unless someone actually tried to fit a LHD gearbox to a RHD car you wont know for sure it it fits or not.

I assume there is a difference in gears. The 4HP22/24 is used in many cars, such as the E30, E34, E32, E31 series. Depending on the model the lever of the gear change is either on the left or on the right side. The shaft however goes thru the complete transmission and you could install the lever on the other side.
Maybe the small brackets you have to change, but that even has to be done by us on the same car when installing a new transmission. Can be used from the old one.

BUT, now I have checked the realoem, and selected as example a 750iL 01/1990 and this pops up

Maybe you call JPAT in the U.K., they are the specialists
